Gabriel Folkesson from Trelleborgs KK has been well observed since his debut on the competition arenas at the age of nine. Gabriel is included in the SOK Challengers effort aiming for the Olympics of 2018 & 2022.

This is what Gabriel has to say about what’s the most fun part of figure skating:
– It’s that a lot of the things are really hard to learn. So when you do learn, it’s super fun. Like when I first learned the double Axel and landed it at competition in the finals of Elitserien 2013, that made me really happy.

What is the hardest part then?
– It is just that, learning the jumps. Some pirouettes are hard too, you have to be agile in different places. But jumps are the most challenging part.

Who are you idols in figure skating?
– Javier Fernandez (Spain) and Yuzuru Hanyu (Japan).

What do you usually think about when you compete?
– A lot of weird thoughts. Of course, if I miss something I think about doing it over. But sometimes I think about things that have nothing to do with figure skating, haha.

What are your strengths and weaknesses as a figure skater?
– I think that I have solid skating skills, I’m good at staying in sync with the music. Sometimes, steps and pirouettes might be my weaknesses, if I get too nervous. They either work out great or really bad. But it works most of the time.

What’s your grand goal in figure skating?
– It’s getting as good as I possibly can be. It would be fun to be in the Europeans, the World Championships and the Olympics.

What’s your favourite jump?
– Toeloop. No, never mind. Axel!

What do you do when you’re not at practice or in school?
– I usually do homework. Sometimes I’m out biking or swimming or something like that. Or I’m playing soccer with my friends, and I like running races with them. Or I’m playing games on my phone, pad or computer. I like “Minecraft” for instance.

How would your friends and family describe you as a person?
– They would say that I’m focused. If I want something, I want it badly. And I would say that I have a good sense of humour. We joke a lot in my family, so that’s where that comes from.

What would you have done with your spare time if you weren’t into figure skating?
– I probably would have been a long distance runner. I might get tired when I run far but it’s like that last bit of energy never runs out.

Where would you travel if you could go anywhere?
– Somewhere in the Alps. Italy or Austria. I like downhill skiing.

What does your classmates say about you spending so much time at practice?
– A lot of people in my class take some kind of training seriously, they play tennis and swim a high levels for instance. But when we have morning practice they usually ask me how I manage to get out of bed so early.

Well, how do you manage to get out of bed so early?
– I don’t know. Most of the times the worst part is right when you’re about to get up, after that it’s all right.

What are you like in the classroom?
– During classes I’m pretty quiet. I sometimes help others if I can, when it’s obvious that the teachers spend more time with certain pupils.

What are you like outside of the classroom then?
– Then I talk more, I joke a lot, and play soccer with my friends.

What’s your favourite team?
– Bayern Munich from Germany.

Not Malmö FF?
– Well, so and so. I used to root for Trelleborg, but they were relegated to the second league.

What do you want to do in the future?
– I’m not sure, but I might want to become a figure skating trainer?
